While you can jump right in to this course, we do recommend that you complete the first FREE training in the series, Defining Your Trained Final Response. This will help you make sure that you have a clear vision of your TFR training goals.
You may also find it helpful to complete Marker Training for Detection Dogs so that you can ensure crystal clear communication with your dog during each training session in this course.
This course is designed as a DIY course for you to complete on your own schedule. It includes each step you need to take, when to move on to the next step, and what to do if you encounter an issue.

Don’t worry! This isn’t one of those courses where you need to invest in hundreds of dollars in equipment to be able to execute the training. All you’ll need is a single prop and an assortment of different target odors. You will also need high value treats or a toy reward. We’ll cover all of this in more detail at the start of the course.
We also highly recommend you record your training sessions, so something to record with is needed. Your phone will work just fine for this. We will also explain more about this in the course (Spoiler Alert: We aren’t into complicated tech. We keep things super simple so you can focus on training).

Commitment to Target Odor is the 2nd of 5 courses in our TFR Toolbox. These courses can be used together in sequence as a system for training a TFR from start to finish. These courses can also be used individually to troubleshoot a particular issue with your TFR.
It’s completely up to you what order you take the courses in, depending on your personal training objective.
Kathleen Kelsey, CTFE’s Online Program Director, has been training search and rescue dogs since 2003. She is a Canine Search Specialist for FEMA Missouri Task Force One and is also on McLean County Illinois EMA. She has worked both live find and human remains detection dogs.
Kathleen also serves an instructor and evaluator for multiple national search dog organizations and provides training instruction and certification for K9 teams to help ensure superior canine resources are available to communities in their time of need.
